Transforming Theater Experiences

How often have you gotten excited about conceptual designs and thought to yourself, “Can this really happen?”

The answer is a resounding yes. Turning your renderings into reality is 100% possible, but don’t take our word for it — ask our friends at the Association for Advancing Automation (A3).

Searching for a Successful Partner
When A3 went looking for a partner for their 2024 event, two of their main requirements were:

  1. Update theaters: Give spaces a modern feel, address sound challenges, and boost sponsor visibility.

  2. Redesign show entry: Refresh the hall entrance look to create a snapshot-worthy scene.

With these in mind, the GES design team got to work creating a cutting-edge show look.

When Challenges Become Opportunities
Led by executive creative director Chris Mohn, the GES team took a unique approach to blending materials not typically seen together.

For both the Automate Theater (50’x60’) and the Innovation Theater (40’x50’), 16-foot AMP walls mitigated sound issues. But the nontraditional use of smoked Plexi covered with mesh fabric gave the theaters the updated look A3 was seeking.

According to Mohn, “By offering just enough visibility into the theaters, we created a curiosity factor without making those inside feel like they were in a fishbowl. Plus, the mesh fabric allowed us to expand the branding, and the two-tiered hanging sign put the sponsors front and center.”

The theaters weren’t the only areas to benefit from the transformation. Leaving behind the traditional arch, a combination of lighting, 3D logos, vibrant signage, and other elements were used to create an immersive experience.

“Walking into AUTOMATE 2024 was an unforgettable experience. There was no doubt you were walking into innovation. Attendees were stopping left and right to take photos. The energy was palpable,” shares Dave Lawton, vice president of business development at GES.

GES Hits the Mark
The results were stunning. The AUTOMATE team was thrilled with the outcome, sharing that GES hit all marks: looks, sound and sponsorship callout.

The GES team couldn’t agree more. “It looked exactly like what we’d created on paper. I had no doubt our team could expertly execute the look, but it was something to see it go from a rendering to reality in front of my eyes,” says Mohn.
