Agility Amongst Uncertainty
For more than 40 years, NMA has relied on GES to help MINExpo shine every four years in Las Vegas. But things move fast in Vegas, and with a four-year show cycle, each event faces a new set of challenges.
In 2024, NMA had to plan around construction at the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC). Both Central and North Halls were under renovation, not to mention MINExpo was using space that hadn’t been there during the 2021 show; this all made moving people through the space complicated.
“Not knowing where construction would be at during the show made the planning process tough,” says Katie Coon, Director of Meetings and Member Relations at NMA.
Using the environmental look NMA had locked down, GES designed flexible signage plans that accounted for the construction progress. At the same time, Client Services Management (CSM) stayed in close contact with the LVCC. When construction updates were issued, the CSM team immediately informed the designers so plans could be adjusted.
According to Jesse Henderson, GES Art Director, “During the design process, we worked very closely with the CSM team to stay on top of what was going on at the LVCC. This exceptional communication meant frequent small adjustments were made, avoiding last-minute plan overhauls and keeping graphics costs down.”
Coon adds, “Thanks to our incredible relationship with GES, and their in-depth knowledge of the LVCC, we were able to stay on top of and navigate the construction changes with ease.”
Lights, Camera, Action: NMA TV Is On Air
The LVCC wasn’t the only one making updates during MINExpo 2024 — NMA got in on the action by adding new elements like NMA TV.
During the initial kick-off meeting, NMA threw out the idea of creating a space in the West Hall lobby where anyone passing could witness live interviews and onsite video production. It was an exciting concept designed to appeal to a new generation of attendees.
Just two weeks after that first meeting, GES presented two complete concepts. Both designed by Henderson, they incorporated the large, fixed LED screen in West Hall, mitigated sound, and situated the layout for ideal filming and light.
“GES nailed the concept of NMA TV because they took the time to listen from the very beginning. I honestly think we had one minor change to the initial plan, but that was it,” shares Ashley Burke, Senior Vice President of Communications at NMA. “What they presented in the first renderings is exactly what was produced on site. It was absolutely a next-level game changer for our show.”
