Celebrate Sustainability on Earth Day

This year marks the 47th anniversary of Earth Day, the start of the modern environmental movement. Sustainability and caring for the earth are core beliefs here at GES as well as in the events industry as a whole.

The industry executes thousands of events around the world each year, and with that comes the environmental strain of hundreds of tons of waste materials. The sad truth is that often these materials end up being disposed of or destroyed, rather than recycled and repurposed, leading to increased waste sent to landfills. But, thanks to the efforts of our employees, we have been working tirelessly for years to become better stewards of the Earth.

In 2014, GES became the first in the industry to receive ISO 20121 and APEX/ASTM Level 2 certifications globally. In order to receive these prestigious certifications, we’ve had to reduce our carbon footprint. We achieve this, in part, by staffing at least 25% from local labor to minimize travel impact. In addition, 97% of our U.S. carriers are part of the SmartWay transport program and a minimum of 25% of our cleaning products are green certified.

And in the United Kingdom, GES has collaborated with Sustainable Events Summit in a research project that will help gather information about sustainability practices at events.

With the acquisition of Poken, GES has further expanded its sustainable practices. By using Poken products to exchange information at shows and events, organizers have drastically cut down on waste at events where the technology is utilized. In 2015, Poken received “Green Supplier of the Year” recognition from the Green Meetings Industry Council.

This year, GES is working toward recertification for APEX/ASTM Level 2. With the help of our employees, customers, suppliers and the entire industry, sustainable practices can become the industry norm.
