Hillhead 2014: A Diamond in the Rough

Buxton, buried deep in the Pennine Hills, is famous for its pure spring water. But that isn’t its only claim to fame; Buxton is also home to Hillhead. Held every second June for 3 days, this unique event focuses on the latest advancements in quarrying and mineral extraction.

The show is one of the most challenging UK builds in the event industry, taking place inside a dormant quarry that has been hollowed out of the surrounding hillside. As the official logistics supplier for this events, and with one road in and one road out, we had to carefully schedule and coordinate the arrival and installation of 190,000 tons of heavy plant equipment to avoid log jams and bottlenecks.

In addition to the logistics, we also installed 2,200 m2 of shell scheme in two temporary pavilions, 16 outdoor stand fit outs, 6,000 m2 of carpet and supplied four articulated lorries filled with furniture to the show organiser; QMJ Publishing Ltd.

With nearly 100 exhibitors bringing a wide variety of quarrying, mineral extraction and other equipment to the show, we deployed an array of specialised, mechanised handling machinery, including one 10 ton and two 5 ton telehandlers, to move it all in to position.

The event was a great success; by the end 17,559 trade visitors attended the 450 exhibitors on show and the weather held out (after 2012 washout, this is a major result!) Many of the visitors who attended this year’s Hillhead expressed the view that this was perhaps the best show yet with more live machine/equipment demonstrations, more new product and service launches, and more technological innovations than ever before.
