Exhibition stands can be incredibly effective at helping you engage with your audience, promote new products and get your business seen. In a crowded exhibition space, you want to be sure that your stand makes a great first impression - but how do you know which type you should choose?
We’ve outlined some of the most popular types of exhibition stands, what they include and some of the main benefits of each design.
When picturing an exhibition stand, a shell scheme stand is probably what comes to mind. The most common type of exhibition stand, a shell scheme is a simple option. Typically provided pre-built by the event organisers, the structure itself is commonly made from a metal frame and lightweight wall panels. The amount of walls usually depends on where your stand is located - it will have between one and three open sides.
A shell scheme stand will also typically come with a fascia board to clearly display your company name and stand number, a ceiling grid, and a carpet or flooring to fit the dimensions of your exhibition space.
This type of stand is popular with exhibitors as it’s the perfect blank canvas. The walls are made to be customised with your own graphics, so you can easily create a display that reflects your brand. As a shell scheme is a simple framework, you can also fill the space with whatever you like, such as furniture and electronics, to really make it your own. For example, if you are planning to use your stand to hold presentations, it can be decked out with chairs and fitted with a screen.
Shell schemes are a relatively low-maintenance option, as the setup is quick and efficient. They are ideal for lower budgets, and work well for showcasing a specific product or service.
A space only stand is an empty area of space that is clearly marked out, ready for you to create something totally bespoke.
If you hire a stand on a space only basis, it’s up to you how you want to fit it out. You’ll need to organise everything from the walls and flooring to the lighting, and even utilities like power. For first-time exhibitors, a space only stand might feel a bit overwhelming, as you’ll have to handle everything yourself, unless you work with an event contractor, agency or stand builder.
However, a space only stand does give you maximum creative control, so you can take it as far as you like (although you’ll need to check your exhibitor manual for restrictions and regulations), which is perfect for businesses that want to make an impact. If you’re looking for features like complex product displays, integrated screens or illuminated signage, a space only stand offers far more freedom than a shell scheme.
If you like the simplicity of a shell scheme and the flexibility that a space only stand can offer, a modular exhibition stand sits somewhere between the two. A modular exhibition stand features customisable frames that can be made to different dimensions and shapes.
Modular exhibition stands are customisable, so that whichever package you choose, you still have the freedom to really make it your own. As standard they include walls that can be updated with custom tensioned wall graphics, but you can swap in features like curved feature walls, backlit signage, storage rooms, arches and display stands, as well as optional extras like AV screens and custom furniture that fits perfectly with your brand colours. So, whilst it may technically be a pre-designed package, you’ll be able to create something that feels bespoke.
Some elements of modular display stands are reusable, including standalone elements like counters, so you can use them for future events or even use them at your office or showroom. The elements that can’t be reused can be recycled, making them a more sustainable option.
The packages also include flooring, lighting, and a power supply, with the option of adding on custom furniture, AV screens and more, so that everything is taken care of for you. Typically, modular exhibition stands are offered with installation and dismantling services included, so you don’t have to worry about organising this yourself.
If you have a shell scheme stand, the framework will normally be set up in advance by the event organiser’s appointed stand build contractor. However, it will be up to you to customise the stand with your own graphics, furniture and displays.
Setting up a space only stand is ultimately the responsibility of an exhibitor, as you’ll have to manage the logistics yourself - including submitting stand plans and risk assessments - but the actual stand itself will be built by the contractor or stand builder that you’ve chosen.
If you choose a modular exhibition stand, this will be installed and dismantled by the exhibition stand company that you, or the event organiser, has chosen to work with, meaning that you only need to handle the finishing touches to your stand.
A custom stand is a fully bespoke exhibition stand, designed specifically for one-off events. As they are built to your specifications, you can let your imagination run wild to create something unique. For this reason, custom stands are a popular option for flagship launches or hero shows. However, custom stands are more expensive than modular stands, as the design process, build and installation is more complex.
