2012 International CES: Bigger, Better and Greener than Ever

International CES is the largest annual show in North America and this year’s show was the largest in its history, attracting more than 153,000 attendees to Las Vegas. The high numbers don’t end there - 3,100 exhibitors, 1.861 million net square feet of floor space (equal to 31 NFL fields) and 30 miles of carpet. It filled every hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center and the Venetian’s, the Renaissance’s and Las Vegas Hotel’s convention spaces.

During peak move-in or move-out days, GES employed at least 1,700 people per day. After a year of planning and 17 days of setting up the show, 2012 International CES was more than a great success; it made history. CES is considered a bellwether show for our industry and these results are certainly encouraging. Not only has the show made history with the numbers above, but with its continued efforts to be the greenest it can be.

For the 2012 show, CEA took the following green measures (as stated on their website here):

1. Used more recyclable carpet (this includes carpet in the aisles, techzones, registration areas and turnkey booth packages).

2. Badge holders were created from repurposed vinyl show banners (also collected post show to repurpose).

3. Indoor show signs and bases were produced with biodegradable cardboard materials.

4. CES worked with Repurpose America to again reuse magnetic, vinyl and cardboard show signs to give back to the local community.

5. Continued efforts to cut print production, which stood at nearly 50 percent of where it was five years ago.

6. Remaining print materials were printed on recycled paper using soy-based ink.

Attendees had the opportunity to see celebrities including Justin Beiber, Jillian Michaels, Miss America 2011, the Jabbawockeez and others.  As always, however, design was the real star. Upon entering the exhibit halls, attendees were immediately immersed into enormous and remarkable experiences. Watch for our three part 2012 International CES blog series starting this tomorrow.
