EN 30 Under Thirty

March 9, 2017 Matt Coyne

"Just move" my watch shouted at me as I contemplated writing just how to inspire, enthuse and, of course congratulate the 2016 class of EN 30 Under Thirty.

As annoying as new technology can be (I’ve taken my watch off), we embrace it. New technology gives us new ideas, new ways of communicating, new ways of interacting, new ways of thinking and we have to welcome it, much like the next generation of our industry. Well, less the annoying part anyway!

Much like my watch telling me to move, the next generation keep pushing us to move forward. It was inspiring to see such a broad range of talent entering the EN 30 Under Thirty this year and an absolute privilege to read the entries. What was really exciting was to read about the futures they envisage and are passionate about persuing within our ever evolving industry.

Refreshingly, it wasn't the same old award type winners you see year on year either. There were strong entries from across every aspect of the industry; suppliers and organisers alike. And while marketing and sales were well represented as expected, there were equally strong entries from operations, young management and support roles, all with aspirations for further development in their exhibition careers and all with strong views as to what the future could hold.

The biggest change in entries I saw this year was the influx of data personnel, again from both the supplier and organising communities, which highlights the value our industry is putting towards nurturing and understanding the behemoth of information that we collectively own.

As an industry we have an incredible wealth of information and experience from years of running events both large and small. It is our responsibility to help the next level of people learn from our experiences. We need to encourage debate. Embrace new ideas. Evolve our understanding of what the future holds.

We rely on relationships that have taken years to build to sometimes pull off the impossible. It’s been said too many times, but is true nonetheless; the people involved in our industry, make our industry what it is today.  By being part of the EN 30 Under Thirty these individuals have a great opportunity to thrive, but they too must embrace the opportunities in front of them to learn & evolve.

We at N200|GES embrace our next generation with passion. From supporting the home-grown talent of the industry via EN 30 Under Thirty type initiatives, to supporting those taking their first step by working with Coventry University, we are passionate about helping to educate, enthuse and inspire our future industry with real life examples, practices and experience within our exciting sector.

My advice to you, next generation of industry professionals, is to get out there. Network. Meet industry people from organiser to supplier. To truly prosper, you should value the experience that is laid out before you, understand it and build on it to evolve your own bright future.

And to our industries elders(?), embrace them. Help them learn. Encourage them to grow. Support them on their career path into our exciting world of events and exhibitions!

Congratulations EN 30 Under Thirty class of 2016 – we look forward to an incredible future working together with you.
