Meet McKenna Mikschl, an Account Associate at GES who joined the program to gain hands-on experience in the trade show and events industry. She was drawn to the program because it provides recent graduates with opportunities to learn on the job, rather than requiring extensive experience upfront.
One of McKenna’s favorite aspects of the program is the opportunity to meet new people. Each show she works on brings together different teams, and traveling together has allowed her to build strong relationships with colleagues. The shared enthusiasm for trade shows has made her experience even more rewarding.
Her advice to future associates? Stay engaged and get involved. McKenna emphasizes that no one expects new hires to know everything immediately, but participating in meetings, industry events, and IAEE chapters can accelerate learning and networking.
Throughout the program, McKenna has gained a deeper appreciation for the many moving parts that contribute to a successful event. While she previously had little exposure to operations, she now recognizes how essential logistics teams and labor unions are to event execution.
One of her most memorable experiences was at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, where she and her team wrapped up the event with a well-known tradition—gas station fried chicken. More than 40 GES team members gathered to enjoy good food, sunshine, and camaraderie, making it a standout moment in her journey.
Relocating from San Diego to Chicago for the role was a big step, but McKenna has felt fully supported by her mentors and teammates. She looks forward to continuing her professional growth and learning more about the industry.
